The stars do their work
without applause.
No one hears them
hammer light
into the dark.
They do not ask
who is watching.
They burn anyway.
Somewhere,
a traveler lifts his head
from a lonely road.
Somewhere,
a child points upward
and believes in something again.
The stars never know this.
They keep shining
the way a heart keeps loving
not for reward,
not for memory,
but because
light
is what they were made to do.
