The road is famous
for the dust that follows it home.
The morning is famous
to the sparrows
who rehearse the sky before sunrise.
The old cup is famous
to the hands that return to it
every quiet evening.
A small lamp is famous
to the darkness
that waits patiently around it.
I do not wish for the loud kind of fame
the kind that burns bright
and forgets its own ashes.
I want the gentler kind.
The kind where a tired stranger
remembers a smile
at the crossing light.
The kind where a child
waves from a window
Because you waved first.
The kind where a simple kindness
travels farther than your name.
If I am remembered at all,
let it be like a bench in a silent park
not important,
not carved in history,
only known
by the people
who needed somewhere
to rest.
