Nobody Told Us We Were Growing Up

We thought growing up
would sound like a celebration
doors opening,
dreams arriving,
our names finally meaning something.

Nobody told us
it would sound like our mother’s voice
getting softer on the phone,
our father’s footsteps
slowing down in the hallway.

We didn’t notice the years leaving.

We were busy chasing futures,
scrolling through strangers’ lives,
saving photographs of sunsets
while forgetting to watch the sky.

Somewhere, our childhood bedroom
became a room for storage.
Old friends became birthday notifications.
And the people we called forever
became stories we rarely tell.

Yet sometimes,
a familiar song finds us,
and suddenly we’re seventeen again
laughing without a reason,
believing tomorrow
had nowhere else to be.

Perhaps growing older
is not about losing who we were.

Perhaps it’s learning
to carry every version of ourselves
without being ashamed
of the roads we took.

So call someone you miss.
Sit longer at the dinner table.
Ask your grandparents that story again.
Put the phone down
when the evening turns gold.

Because one day,
you’ll miss this ordinary afternoon
more than you can understand.

And the life you’re waiting to begin?

Look around.

You are already living
the memory
you’ll one day wish you could revisit.
