Cold as Wind
Cold as wind, burning like an ember,
Maybe I’m acting like December.
Nights are lonesome,
Souls are all choked.
The streets are all empty,
Scenes are all smogged.
Wintry mornings wrapped in white,
I know it’s soothing, I’ll be alright.
Gushes all silent, heavens all clear,
I am at the end of my twenty-second year.
In this poem, Urooma Niyaz paints a wintry landscape, reflecting a sense of solitude and transition as she navigates the end of her twenty-second year.

The Little Rebel
As usual, morning at the last of the Year,
Trees and skies were as usual clear.
Surroundings were hidden in white smog.
Channels were about to write a new catalog.
Clean shoes and a uniform to wear,
Getting ready without any fear.
Burdened bag at the end of the term,
He was on his way with belief, firm.
Without knowing about the last farewell,
Walked away smiling, The Little Rebel.
He was too Young for shells to hear,
Poor little was someone’s dear.
The white uniform turned red,
Blood, bodies, everywhere spread.
He wasn’t so brave,
Not an adult, so in a grave.
The poor, little, ambitious soul,
Resting in peace, burying his goal.
This poignant piece contrasts a seemingly ordinary morning with a tragic, unexpected end, capturing the innocence lost in the face of violence.

The Silence of Absence
A question started with Why,
Your behavior was all dry.
Ye didn’t even try,
To console me when I cry.
Where were ye, when I was alone,
I feel alienation in your tone.
I called you and you were gone,
Neither ever appeared nor was shown.
Why are you silent? answer me,
I waited for every cup of tea.
And I tried very hard to see,
Where were ye when I needed thee?
Here, Urooma Niyaz explores feelings of abandonment and the longing for comfort, expressing a deep sense of betrayal and isolation.

Goodbye Teen
Although life has been so keen,
I’ve enjoyed every blue and green.
Not all the scenery and scenes,
But I’ve watched things on screen.
While studying fats and proteins,
I turned from a human to a machine.
Now it seems, the world has been,
Waiting for me to leave my “nineteen”.
I don’t want to behave so meanly,
But it’s time to say: “GOODBYE TEEN!”.
This reflective poem marks the transition from adolescence to adulthood, capturing the bittersweet farewell to youthful innocence.

A Farewell to Tears
Hey, tears!
Nothing to do with you,
And with the time we spent.
Don’t follow me anymore,
I feel sick of your scent.
I know when I was alone,
Ye snugged me as your tenant.
But now I want to be happy,
Can’t pay any more rent.
Please let me go off,
And live the life I meant.
In this piece, Niyaz bids adieu to sorrow, seeking liberation from past pain and embracing the possibility of a happier future.

The Enchanted Gaze
Eyes deep as a swan’s lake,
One can’t adore a single take.
Shining hair as clear as Cascade,
Shadow soothes like thick shade.
Every wink sounds like applause,
The heart also wants to take a pause.
Words drip from the mouth like petals,
Steps sound like soft rattles.
Lovely, he is from head to toe,
Awaiting eyes are standing in a row.
Niyaz describes a mesmerizing presence with enchanting imagery, celebrating beauty and the impact of a captivating persona.

Rain Promise
If rain starts to fall down,
Wear it as a savior gown.
It’ll soothe you with the essence,
Of my existence beyond the fence.
Time flew like an eagle’s flight,
Loved ones turned out of sight.
But someday, somewhere,
We’ll meet without any fear.
Of being lost due to time,
Or being without exact rhyme.
This poem offers solace and hope, suggesting that even amidst separation, there remains a promise of reunion and connection.
