We Were Just Here

Yesterday

is becoming crowded.

It is filled with people
who were just here.

The friend you promised
to call tomorrow.

The grandparent
whose stories felt endless.

The child
who wanted to show you something
for the hundredth time.

The version of yourself
who thought there would always be time.

Life does not leave all at once.

It leaves quietly.

A laugh becomes a memory.

A routine becomes nostalgia.

A familiar face
becomes an old photograph
living in your phone.

When we are young,
we spend time carelessly
as if the supply is infinite.

When we grow older,
we search for the very moments
we once rushed through.

The strange thing is

every generation believes
it has more time than it does.

The teenager scrolling at midnight.

The parent chasing another promotion.

The old man
staring out of a window
at a road he once walked.

They are all doing
the same thing.

Trying to keep hold
of a day that refuses to stay.

Maybe that is why
the smallest moments matter most.

A conversation.

A shared meal.

A hand reaching for yours.

A voice saying,
“Stay a little longer.”

Because one day
we will look back
at what felt ordinary

and realize

it was the good old days.

And they were gone
before we knew
they had arrived.
